چکیده

In previous papers (9, 14) we have discussed the changes that occur in the acid-base equilibrium of serum of normal women during pregnancy. In brief, these changes are reduction of the serum carbon dioxide content and serum proteins, accompanied by a comparable reduction of total base. These findings have been confirmed by Stander, Eastman, Harrison, and Cadden (21). The reduction of serum proteins appeared to be at the expense of the albumin fraction (5, 9, 17). Stander et al. (21) reported a normal hydrogen ion concentration and this has been confirmed by us (9). Thus the reduction of the carbon dioxide content of the serum, which has long been known to occur during the course of normal pregnancy, is associated with a diminished total base and not an accumulation of other “acids.” The explanation of these abnormal findings remains obscure and it was felt that a study of abnormal pregnancy might contribute not only to the solution of the pathogenesis of the toxemias themselves but also to the explanation of the acid-base disturbances in normal pregnancy. During the course of pregnancy there may occur one of a group of disorders, loosely termed the toxemias of pregnancy. Because of their obscure etiology as well as clinical diversity, the classification of the toxemias has been difficult and confused. The numer-

Concerning the Stability of the Acid-base Equilibrium of the Blood in Pregnant Animals

1. The acid-base equilibrium of the blood as indicated by determinations of the reserve alkali of the blood remains constant in non-pregnant animals at different age periods. This statement does not imply that the acid-base balance of such animals at different age periods is a stable balance. 2. In pregnant animals of the same age periods as the control animals there may develop an instability ...

Acid-Base Equilibrium and Salt and Water Exchange

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL CONSIDERATIONS Definitions: Van Slyke72 has defined acidosis as a condition in which the bicarbonate of the blood or serum, or, more exactly, the base available for combination with bicarbonate, is diminished. Alkalosis is a condition in which there is in the blood or serum an abnormal excess of bicarbonate, or base available for combination with bicarbonate. These de...

The Relationship of Uterine Artery Doppler Velocimetry Findings and Hemoglobin Concentration with Pregnancy Outcomes in Pre-eclampsia

Abstract Background: Epidemiologic studies have shown the relationship of maternal hemoglobin level and abnormal findings in uterine Doppler sonography with pregnancy- related complications. In this study, we evaluated the relationship of uterine artery Doppler velocimetry findings and hemoglobin level with the outcomes of pregnancy in women with preeclampsi...

Lipid Concentration at 13-23 Weeks of Pregnancy and the Risk of Abnormal Glucose Challenge Test (GCT)

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was evaluating the relationship between maternal serum lipid measured at 13-23 weeks of pregnancy and subsequent glucose intolerance. Materials and Methods: In a prospective study, 624 pregnant women prior to 23 weeks were eligible for the study. Primarily, serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglyceride were ...

Quantum mechanics investigation of acid dissociation constant of carboxylic acids in aqueous solution

According to the Bronsted definition, any compound which has a hydrogen atom is an acid, since itmay be lost as a proton. A thermodynamical cycle is proposed to calculate absolute pKa values forBronsted acids in aqueous solution. The equilibrium of dissociation of a Bronsted acid depends onthe interaction of the acid and its conjugate base with solvent molecules. There fore the pKa valuedepends...
